Nürburg (dpa) – Formula 1 is back in the Eifel after seven years. The last Grand Prix winner at the Nürburgring is Sebastian Vettel. Before the eleventh race of the season on Sunday (2.10 p.m. / RTL and Sky), the name Schumacher also plays an exciting role.
Why is Formula 1 racing at the Nürburgring again?
The corona pandemic has resulted in a number of cancellations in the calendar of the motorsport premier class – from France to Singapore. In its need, Formula 1 turned to courses in Europe that can host races with ease and are so extensive that the Corona regulations can be implemented smoothly. Like the course in the Eifel, which hosted Formula 1 for the last time in 2013, but could no longer afford the entry fee afterwards.
What weather do fans and Formula 1 entourage expect?
Up to 20,000 spectators are admitted to this Grand Prix weekend. Like the drivers, you have to be prepared for changeable weather. “The weather always plays a role. When it’s wet, it messes things up. Then we could benefit from our situation,” said Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, who won the last Red Bull edition in 2013. On race Sunday it should currently be eight degrees cold and there is a high probability that it will rain in the afternoon. Incidentally, a Nürburgring race in October is nothing new: Formula 1 was already racing on the track in the middle of the woods in early October in 1984 and 1995.
What does the health and hygiene concept look like?
“Every step – from the arrival to the experience in the grandstand to the departure – is organized and checked for corona security. This was also extensively checked by the public order and health department,” assured Nürburgring managing director Mirco Markfort. It all started with the contactless ticket purchase, which is only possible in a personalized and precise manner. But what if the warning value for infections in the Ahrweiler district, where the course is, should skyrocket? “We have a stable incidence value. Should the values increase unexpectedly so strongly, the race itself would take place in any case. What about the spectators would have to be clarified again,” said Markfort.

Is world championship leader Lewis Hamilton the favorite?
In any case, the six-time Formula 1 world champion will be highly motivated. Two weeks ago, the British cost two time penalties after illegal trial starts to secure victory in Sochi. Now Lewis Hamilton wants to celebrate his seventh win of the season. It would be a very special one, because then he would draw level with record holder Michael Schumacher with 91st Grand Prix victories. “It’s always good for Mercedes to come to Germany. We have an emotional relationship with the Nürburgring,” assured Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.
Does the Schumacher name play a major role at the Nürburgring?
Oh yeah. Michael Schumacher won five times at the Nürburgring (1995, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2006) – no other driver was more successful than the Kerpener. A section of the route is named in his honor: the Schumacher-S. Next year his son Mick wants to get promoted to Formula 1. The 21-year-old son of the record world champion will even be driving for the first time in training for Alfa Romeo on a Grand Prix weekend on Friday.
