Bremen (dpa) – Even in corona times, memories of better days reverberate through the Bremen Weser Stadium before every game.
The 3: 1 victory at the then big rival Bayern Munich, through which Werder made the fourth and still the last German championship perfect on May 8, 2004, is an integral part of the song “Lebenslang Grün-Weiß”, which can be played by everyone without a spectator Kick-off is played. Ivan Klasnic’s goal after a difficult mistake by Oliver Kahn, the further goals by Johan Micoud and Ailton – these were unforgettable moments for the Werder family.
16 years later, Werder and Bavaria are as far apart from each other as soccer operations in Corona mode are. There are 45 (!) Points between the two clubs three game days before the end of the season, which means that on Tuesday (8:30 p.m. / Sky) there are very different things at stake. Munich can complete their eighth championship title in a row with a threesome, the Bremen team need every meter to somehow avert the first relegation in 40 years.
It is the same for both teams that they are going into the end of the season with a lot of confidence, which is particularly new for the Bremen team. But the North Germans were the big winner of the weekend. Clearly won himself in Paderborn, plus defeats from the direct competition from Düsseldorf and Mainz – it couldn’t have gone better for the green-whites. “I am assuming that we are going to stay in the league,” said striker Niclas Füllkrug after his comeback with a goal and full of optimism.
The Bremen team have put themselves in a position that nobody would have believed a few weeks ago: They even have direct relegation again in their own hands. After the difficult and almost hopeless duel with Bayern, the explosive comparison with the faltering FSV Mainz 05 follows on Saturday. On the last match day, 1. FC Köln will be on the Weser.
In Paderborn, the green-whites proved that they can handle pressure. Against Bayern, this is actually low on Tuesday, because nobody expects anything from the Bremen. Since Mainz faces a similarly difficult task on Wednesday in Dortmund, nothing should change in the overall constellation under normal circumstances.
But they will not simply give away the game against Munich. There is still too much prestige in the duels between north and south, and there is simply too much at stake on Tuesday. “It is an incredibly difficult task against an incredibly dominant Bayern team that has been more dominant than it has been for a long time,” said Kohfeldt. “But of course we have an idea of how we want to meet them.”
The fact that the goal difference can also be significant in the relegation battle should not matter either. “I can not stand in front of the team and say: please do not lose 0: 6. Talking beforehand only about the goal difference and the amount of defeat, that is not possible,” said the Werder coach, who is therefore his best formation wants to bid. “I won’t spare a player.”
The fact that two world-class people are returning to Bayern in Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller does not make the task easier for Werder. “That is another quality,” Kohfeldt admitted. Nevertheless, the championship celebration of Bavaria should be postponed again for a few days. “We have not prepared anything. It may well be that the Bavarians are preparing something, but we hope that they can pack it up again afterwards,” said Bremen managing director Frank Baumann.
