This is how Bayern become champions today – and that’s how Paderborn relegates

Decisions on matchday 31

The Bundesliga season 2019/20 is entering the decisive phase after the restart. On matchday 31, the decision could be made in three cases – under certain conditions. explains how.

The 31st matchday of the 2019/20 season is coming up – some decisions could be made. After the restart due to the Corona crisis, some teams are still concerned with everything: title, European Cup, relegation. Accordingly, three clubs are in focus this weekend: FC Bayern, Borussia Dortmund – and SC Paderborn. Other clubs could tip the scales. explains the scenarios:

FC Bayern become German champions ahead of schedule

Everything is ready for Munich: With a win in the top game on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the team of coach Hansi Flick could celebrate the eighth championship title in a row – if chaser Borussia Dortmund fails at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Because then Bayern would have 73 points, BVB would remain at 63 points – impossible to catch up with three games remaining.

Theoretically, even if Dortmund drew and then nine points ahead, Bayern could no longer take the title. Because BVB would then have to win all the games of the difficult remaining program (against Mainz, in Leipzig, against Hoffenheim) – Bayern would lose all games (in Bremen, against Freiburg, in Wolfsburg). And then there would be the goal difference: Currently Bayern (+60) is 14 goals better than Dortmund (+46). So in theory it is possible, but practically impossible. “I think that all other teams except Bayern are out,” said BVB captain Mats Hummels after the 0: 1 bankruptcy in the top game against Bayern. “We’re seven points behind. We should win all the games and hope for three slips in six games.”

That means: It is also up to the Gladbachers to keep the title race alive in the Bundesliga – or to give Bayern the 30th championship title.

BVB makes the Champions League perfect

Another season without a title for Borussia Dortmund – but the team coached by Lucien Favre could at least reach the top class again three games before the end and thus achieve the minimum goal. BVB currently has 63 points in second place, seven points ahead of fifth Bayer Leverkusen (56, just like Gladbach in fourth place).

Dortmund will play with relegation candidate Düsseldorf on Saturday, Bayer will have to play a tough away game against FC Schalke 04 on Sunday. If Dortmund wins, and the Werkself only draw, the Champions League will almost certainly be reached – with nine points ahead and a much better goal difference.

The SC Paderborn descends

“We have the worst starting position and maybe we have the squad with the lowest individual quality. But for me we have the biggest heart in this league,” said SCP coach Steffen Baumgart a few weeks ago about his team. Despite the big heart of the league, things look very bad for the Paderborners. 18th place with only 20 points from 30 games, currently eight points behind Fortuna Düsseldorf on relegation place 16.

If things go badly for the Baumgart-Elf on the next matchday, the already threatening and probable relegation could already be sealed: Because only a victory in a direct duel with the penultimate Werder Bremen will keep the very last chance of relegation alive. In the worst case, Paderborn plays a draw, and at the same time Düsseldorf surprisingly wins against Borussia Dortmund. Then everything would be finally over.
