Zuzenhausen (dpa) – Alfred Schreuder has to go to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as successor to star coach Julian Nagelsmann after a year. The Bundesliga soccer team justified the surprising separation from the Dutchman with “differences in future planning”.
Schreuder also stumbled across a miserable home record, and Nagelsmann’s shadow was too big for the brittle 47-year-old. “We disagreed on important detailed questions, so that collaboration beyond the end of the season no longer makes sense,” said sports director Alexander Rosen.
For the rest of the season, the current team of coaches around Matthias Kaltenbach, Michael Rechen and Timo Gross as well as Marcel Rapp and Kai Herdling from the club’s own academy are to take care of the team. In addition, roses should move closer to the professionals. A new coach will prepare the team for the new round. Schreuder had succeeded Nagelsmann, who had moved to RB Leipzig, last summer. This Friday of all days, Nagelsmann competes with the Champions League contender in Sinsheim.
The contract with Schreuder, which ran until June 30, 2022, was terminated. In a season with eight home defeats, some of them crashing so far, Erik ten Hag’s former assistant at Ajax Amsterdam led Hoffenheim back on course to the Europa League. Four games before the end of the season, TSG is in seventh place in the table. At the same time, the club, where whiz star Nagelsmann, as the youngest head coach in the history of the league, caused a lot of attention, disappeared more and more from the public eye. Schreuder had helped shape Nagelsmann’s rise.
“Unfortunately we could not agree on a common way of how we would like to lead TSG into the future. I regret this development. However, it is not unusual in professional life to have different opinions. You have to be honest with each other and that draw the appropriate consequences, “said Schreuder. His brother and assistant coach Dick Schreuder will also leave the North Baden club. It is the ninth coaching change in this Bundesliga season.
“Alfred stabilized the team after the change last summer and established it in the top midfield of the league. In a season that goes down in the history of the Bundesliga as one of the most extraordinary seasons, not least due to the corona crisis,” said TSG Managing Director Peter Görlich. When looking for a successor, the TSG will probably rely on a coach who will put the former village club back in the spotlight.
Nagelsmann once called Schreuder a “hardliner”: “I think he speaks to his players much harder than I do.” The Hoffenheimers had also lost some of their enthusiasm this season. However, the Dutchman also competed under difficult conditions: Before this round, TSG sold top performers such as Nico Schulz (Borussia Dortmund), Nadiem Amiri and Kerem Demirbay (both Leverkusen) for high transfer revenues. In addition, the team’s star, Croatian World Cup runner-up Andrej Kramaric, was repeatedly injured.
