East Westphalia back in 2nd division
The SC Paderborn is the first relegation of the Bundesliga season. The East Westphalia lost their away game against Union Berlin and can no longer reach the saving shore.
Steffen Baumgart paced up and down the sidelines, roaring and clapping his team to the very end, but all effort was in vain. The SC Paderborn is the first relegated from the Bundesliga and has to take the bitter course in the second division as the bottom.
East Germany lost 0: 1 (0: 1) on match day 32 to Union Berlin, who had now been saved, despite a brave performance. The gap to the relegation place can no longer be made up in the remaining two season games.

For Paderborn it is the second Bundesliga relegation after 2015 – it was sealed on the day of the return of the Bundesliga by local rival Arminia Bielefeld. In addition, the SCP changed league for the third year in a row after marching from the 3rd division to the Bundesliga in the two previous seasons.
“There was always something missing,” said captain Christian Strohdiek soberly after the defeat into the sky microphone. That suited the game, but also the entire season. “When the first disappointment is gone, we can only be proud,” said Strawdiek. The gap to the relegation place can no longer be made up in the remaining two season games.
Union Berlin, the rising star, holds the class early
Union, on the other hand, was extremely jubilant: the league newcomer was able to drop out of the league ahead of schedule, Union can plan another year in the upper house – including two derbies against Hertha BSC. The former Unioner Ben Zolinski (27th, own goal) had decapitated the Berliners with a failed defense.
Given the apparently hopeless situation in the table cellar, coach Baumgart had relieved the pressure from his team before the game at his heart club Union. “The players should support each other and play courageously forward. We can play free,” said the coach.

However, the “fireworks” that Baumgart had requested from his team failed to materialize. The SCP searched in vain for solutions against the well-organized Berliners and afforded too many simple ball losses. On the defensive, Paderborn also always offered the Berliners space.
Union didn’t take advantage of great opportunities – Paderborn’s Dräger failed from close range
Union used these with some good combinations. Sebastian Andersson (2nd), Ken Reichel (13th) and Marius Bülter (24th), who beheaded on the outside post, had good chances before Zolinski Paderborns worsened the already slim chances of being saved. The only dangerous action of the guests was provided by Mohamed Dräger (38th), who only hit the outside network from a short distance.
As in the previous home game against Schalke 04, Union fans made themselves felt. Occasional cheers and calls from outside the stadium at the Alte Försterei were clearly audible in the interior.
With chants from the opposing fans in the ears and the impending relegation in mind, Paderborn’s resistance increased after the change of sides. Baumgart’s team got into the duels better and increasingly shifted the game to half of the opponent. Union rarely provided relief – but then became a fire hazard: Robert Andrich (72nd) failed on the inside post.
SC Freiburg – Hertha BSC 2-1
The “little” SC Freiburg can dream more than ever of the concert of the big ones. The Breisgauer won 2-1 (0-0) against Hertha BSC and climbed to the qualification place for the Europa League at least until Wednesday. On Saturday (3.30 p.m. / in the live ticker at t-online.de), the SC will face the tough test of master Bayern Munich.
Vincenzo Grifo (61.) and super joker Nils Petersen with his 25th league goal as a substitute (71.) were successful for the Freiburg, who last reached the European Cup group stage in 2013. Three years ago, the team of coach Christian Streich failed in the qualification.
