Nyon (dpa) – After weeks of internal discussions, the Executive Committee of the European Football Union meets on Wednesday and Thursday. Pioneering decisions should be made in the video section.
The timetable for the European Cup competitions has to be decided, the schedule for the national teams has to be set. The focus is also on the EM, which was postponed to the summer of 2021 and will also take place in Munich. The most important questions:
What’s next in the European Cup?
At the latest from the quarter-finals, the remaining games in the Champions League and Europa League are to be played centrally in one country in August. Both competitions are stuck in the round of 16. Sky Italia reported on Monday that the return matches in the premier class should still be held in the respective cities as planned. According to media reports, the mini-tournament of the Europa League could be played in Germany, according to the “Bild” newspaper North Rhine-Westphalia is the favorite with the venues Cologne, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen and Duisburg. Frankfurt / Main had also expressed interest, but more in the Champions League, possible partners would be Mainz, Sinsheim and Wiesbaden. The games in the premier class will probably go to Lisbon, where two stadiums would be played. The possible final date is August 23 after semi-finals on August 18 and 19 and the quarter-finals from August 12 to 15.
Which German clubs are still there?
In the Champions League, RB Leipzig is already in the quarter-finals, FC Bayern shortly before. The Munich team still have to play their second leg in the round of 16 against Chelsea, the first leg won the record champions 3-0. In the Europa League, Eintracht Frankfurt have to catch up after defeating FC Basel 3-0 and VfL Wolfsburg after defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-2. Bayer Leverkusen won the first knockout round at Glasgow Rangers 3-1.
What else to consider?
If the remaining knockout rounds are relocated to one place, UEFA would have to decide whether the away goals rule will continue to apply. Furthermore, it is likely that in the quarter-finals and semi-finals only one knockout duel will decide on the progress, not more back and forth to reduce the games. Because the final venues Istanbul (Champions League) and Gdansk (Europa League) do not appear to be playing, UEFA should try to compensate. In the premier class, however, the finals are given up to and including 2023 – including 2022 to Munich.
What decisions are being made for the EM?
After moving the tournament to the summer of 2021 (June 11 to July 11), UEFA will have to confirm the host cities. It is questionable whether all twelve will stay on board. While Munich, where three group games and a quarter-finals are expected to rise, has already made its promise public, Bilbao, for example, is considered a shaky candidate. The venues of Rome and Baku also seem uncertain. “Everything is in order with nine cities,” said UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin. The plan with twelve stadiums is still in place, but if necessary “ten, nine or eight” would do so. A possible bonus for Munich: The Allianz Arena would certainly be a candidate to take over games from missing venues.
What is the general schedule for the new season?
UEFA is faced with a complicated deadline puzzle. When the current season, in which the big national leagues end at different times, is reasonably over, the next games are actually already to come. At the beginning of September two games of the Nations League are still scheduled, Germany should play against Spain on September 3 and three days later in Switzerland. However, the playoffs for the European Championship should have priority. 16 teams are involved in twelve outstanding games for four European Championship participants. In October and November, further periods of suspension follow – the Nations League may therefore not start until autumn. Always on the condition that there is largely freedom of travel again. At club level, the mode and time for qualifying for the upcoming European Cup season must be determined.
