Sinsheim / Leipzig (dpa) – For Julian Nagelsmann it is the first return with RB Leipzig to the old place of work – and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim would like to keep the coaching star right away.
The Bundesliga encounter between the two clubs on Friday (8.30 p.m. / DAZN and Amazon Prime) suddenly slipped into the middle of the search for a new head coach at the Kraichgauer.
Nagelsmann’s successor and former assistant Alfred Schreuder had to go surprisingly this week – because of “differences in future planning” at TSG. Now sports director Alexander Rosen is looking for an “external solution” for the new season. A stroke of luck like the painfully missing Nagelsmann, who rose from Nobody to “DFB coach of the year” in 2017, is rare in this business.
The say in the transition coaching staff at the Hoffenheim team now has roses. The 41-year-old director of professional football wants to coordinate the cooperation of the support team, which consists of a total of six people: in addition to the 41-year-old A-license holder Rosen from assistant coach Matthias Kaltenbach, goalie trainer Michaelrechner and video analyst Timo Gross and the two young coaches Marcel Rapp and Kai Herdling.
All the people that Nagelsmann still knows well from his time in Kraichgau. And that’s why he’s looking forward to seeing you again. The 34-year-old is not afraid of going into the wrong cabin out of habit. “We park on the other side by bus. If we parked in the same driveway, maybe then,” said Nagelsmann.
Since his arrival in Leipzig last summer, he has only visited the region once. “It would have been very special with fans to be able to play in the stadium for the first time again. Nevertheless, it is a special game because you also see a lot of former employees. Even at the airport in Mannheim you can see people you see knows and that’s why it’s a nice feeling, “said the Leipzig coach.
Under Rosen Hoffenheim still wants to make the leap into the Europa League, for which the current table position seven is sufficient. “I trust these guys to do everything. Now it’s just about these four games. We want to tackle them bravely and with a good spirit,” said Rosen. As the youngest Bundesliga coach, Nagelsmann once lifted TSG onto the international stage, first in the Europa League, then even in the Champions League.
To move into this in his first year in Leipzig, he needs three points in Hoffenheim. With better exploitation of chances than recently against Paderborn, this is quite possible, Nagelsmann believes. He expects Rosen and his staff to come up with a surprise to prove themselves in the Bundesliga. “But maybe I’ll come up with a surprise,” said Nagelsmann.
In any case, the TSG players will find it difficult to avoid old processes in stressful situations after such a short job among the new bosses, Nagelsmann believes. “You cannot change everything completely,” said the coveted coach.
