Defeated Monday in the Premier League, Leeds offered a thunderous reaction this Friday evening against Aston Villa. Marcelo Bielsa’s side won thanks to a hat-trick from Patrick Bamford and reached the podium.
Leeds United had experienced their first defeat of the season at home on Monday against Wolverhampton (0-1). A reaction was expected in the face of an Aston Villa who could take the lead in the English Championship if successful.
Undefeated so far, the Villains were unable to continue with a very impressive dynamic (12 goals scored in 4 games) against an opponent still so energetic in his pressure. Marcelo Bielsa scored the blow by making a substitution after barely 20 minutes of play. His defender, Pascal Struijk, already had a yellow on the clock and faced with the possible expulsion that could have happened, the Argentinian coach took out the player, quite incredulous.
Aston Villa frontman Jack Grealish called on Illan Meslier (51st) and the French goalkeeper was able to deflect the shot after a well-managed save. In 20 minutes, Patrick Bamford scored a hat-trick (55th, 67th and 74th) to fold the match alone in favor of Leeds. On his third goal, the forward played with three opponents in the box before unleashing an unstoppable whip shot.
In keeping with Bielsa’s principles, Leeds continued to play in an attempt to score a fourth goal, but never came, despite a final attack with seven elements close to the opponents’ box. The main thing is elsewhere: after a successful overall performance, Leeds were able to get the better of Aston Villa, another surprise team at the start of the Premier League season. Pending the rest of Matchday 6, Leeds climbed onto the championship podium, two points behind Aston Villa and three behind leaders Everton.
