( – Last week, the Formula 1 teams received four FIA technical directives. These all relate to the drive, and it was immediately speculated how this extensive advance came about. Many suspected it had something to do with the mysterious agreement between the FIA ​​and Ferrari over the 2019 Scuderia engine.

The new guidelines were also linked to Maranello because the deal with the FIA ​​included, among other things, the future support of Ferrari in monitoring the power units. At the same time, the guidelines also relate exactly to the things that Ferrari rivals Mercedes and Red Bull had asked for last year.

The reality is probably that there is something in from both sides. The FIA’s push has to do with the fact that the association wants to do everything possible with the engines to ensure that the teams adhere to the rules down to the smallest detail. Formula One wants to make sure that the suspicions and accusations from last year will not be repeated.

New guidelines: preventive care instead of aftercare

The guidelines are therefore rather clarifications that were created in collaboration with the teams. The goal is to close loopholes that, according to the teams, apparently still existed. These are theoretical things and not concrete trickery that teams may have done in the past.

The FIA ​​simply wanted to be able to trust the existing tests, sensors, measurements and systems. The technical directives relate to four separate areas: energy recovery systems (ERS), oil consumption, pressure and temperature sensors and measurements of fuel consumption.

TD / 018-20 is concerned with monitoring the performance and energy of the ERS and confirms previously discussed plans for a new sensor that will be attached to measure ERS power. The plan is for the top three teams to use it at the beginning of the season, with the other racing teams to follow later in the year.

What is new, however, is the limitation of the frequency at which the teams can call up performance. This is to prevent the teams from making sudden, sudden changes in power levels. This could cause the measurements of the FIA ​​sensors to be distorted.

Focus on engines in 2020

TD / 019-20 is about oil consumption. A new limit of 0.3 liters per 100 kilometers is prescribed this year. Here, the FIA ​​clarifies how the oil measurements are made in order to achieve the most accurate result. It is also intended to ensure that the teams cannot add additional oil or use lubricants to transport chemicals into the fuel.

TD / 020-20 provides information about the gas flow and pressure and temperature sensors. This is how you want to give the teams clarity about how the measurements are made.

Finally, there is TD / 021-20, which relates to fuel consumption. The methodology that the FIA ​​will use based on the experience from the previous year has been improved here. At that time, Ferrari caused controversy before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix because more petrol than specified was found on Charles Leclerc’s car.

All four technical directives are minor, and none of them specifically relate to something that a team might have done in the past. Instead, the FIA ​​made a clear statement that in 2020 you will look closely at what the teams are doing with their engines this year.
