Munich (dpa) – This Supercup classic fascinates every year. FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund meet once again in a title duel – the eighth time in total and the seventh time since the reintroduction in 2010.
“The Supercup is part of German football and we’re trying to win the game,” said Bayern coach Hansi Flick. “We can compete with the best in Germany. This game will help us.” BVB hopes that too. “It’s a nice feeling to be where we stand when we play against the supposedly best team in Europe or the world,” said Marco Reus before the game on Wednesday (8.30 p.m. / ZDF and DAZN).
DEFEATS: Both teams had to deal with surprising bankruptcies. Bayern lost in Hoffenheim (1: 4). “Unfortunately, we haven’t implemented some of the guidelines of our game that well: little depth, little protection. We clearly stated that we want to play differently at Bayern,” said Flick. “But everyone is self-critical enough and knows that.” Dortmund lost in Augsburg (0-2). “We have to have a different mentality and try to win this game because it is important for us for the next few weeks,” said Reus.
STAFF: FC Bayern have to do without Leroy Sané (knee capsule injury), David Alaba (muscular problems) is ailing. BVB is missing goalkeeper Roman Bürki and young star Jadon Sancho with respiratory infections. Thorgan Hazard (muscle injury) is also out. Lukasz Piszczek, however, is fit again after back problems.
HISTORY: In 2018, FC Bayern won the German Supercup for the seventh time, making it the record winner in this competition. In 2019, BVB shortened the gap with the 2-0 win against Munich and could now draw level.
TORJÄGERDUELL: Robert Lewandowski can hope for the freestyle for “Europe’s Footballer of the Year” this week. For Flick, the “best goalscorer in the world” wants to play again from the start – and score – after his temporary break against Hoffenheim. “Lewy is an even more complete striker because of his age and experience. His odds are gigantic. But I see Erling (Haaland) every day and I can only say that he is on the right path,” said Reus. Flick also trusts the young BVB Norwegian Haaland to have a great career. “He is well on the way to becoming one of the best goalscorers in the world,” said the Bayern coach.
FRUSTSPIELE: The Dortmunders went down regularly in Munich in recent years. 0: 6, 0: 5 and 0: 4 are the terrifying results. “We have to display a different body language, be more toxic, play with more emotions and then remain calm in phases in which we are pushed back in,” warned captain Reus.
TITLE HUNGER: Triple from Champions League, Cup and Championship, plus the European Supercup – FC Bayern rushes from title to title. After the Supercup, the Club World Cup is still the next championship.
GHOST GAME: The players have to forego spectators in the stadium. The reason is the current pandemic situation in Munich. Even at the start of the Bundesliga in the Allianz Arena, no stadium visitors were admitted at short notice. The fans can see the game in Germany on ZDF and DAZN. Overall, the game will be broadcast in over 200 countries.
