Rome (dpa) – Of all people, Ciro Immobile gave the supposed group favorite Borussia Dortmund a capital false start in the Champions League.
With his goal to make it 1-0 (6th minute), the attacker, who was once retired from BVB after only one season, initiated the sobering 1: 3 (0: 2) defeat of the Bundesliga club at Lazio Rome. In front of 1000 spectators in the Stadio Olimpico, Luiz Felipe (23rd) and Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro (76th), who was alluded to by Immobile, scored the other goals for the Italians on Tuesday evening. This means that the Revierclub will be under pressure in the coming games against Zenit St. Petersburg (October 28) and at Club Bruges (November 4). Erling Haaland (71.) only met for the interim connection for BVB.
“We slept through the first half completely. That is actually inexplicable. That is of course not our claim. We missed everything today. That is of course bad in the Champions League,” complained BVB captain Marco Reus after the game in the first Interview with the TV channel Sky.
Lucien Favre and Sebastian Kehl found similar clear words: “I’m very disappointed. We should have more patience and defend everyone together. We didn’t do that. And I’m not just talking about the defense. We weren’t there – to defend and to running, “commented the coach. “That was a desperate performance, especially in the first half. We can’t play in the Champions League like that,” said licensed player boss Sebastian Kehl.
The shortage of personnel on the defensive, in which regulars such as Manuel Akanji and Emre Can (red card suspension) were missing, turned out to be too big a burden. But not only in defense, but also in the build-up game, Borussia, who were indisposed for a long time, remained far behind their possibilities.
After just six minutes, BVB was behind. Because the Italians took advantage of a bad pass from Dortmund’s newcomer Thomas Meunier. After a pass from Joaquin Correa, Immobile demonstrated why he was Serie A top scorer last year. In the style of a real goalkeeper, he chipped the ball past Marwin Hitz, who again took on the goalkeeper Roman Bürki, who had since recovered from an infection.
The hit had a visible effect at Borussia and played the counter-strong Romans splendidly in the cards. Bad passes en masse were an expression of growing uncertainty. This brought BVB further into need and gave the particularly motivated real estate (14th / 15th) two more options.
Only two minutes after Raphael Guerreiro (21st) had a great chance to equalize, who failed from close range to Lazio keeper Thomas Strakosha, the Favre-Elf suffered the next setback. Luiz Felipe, who was surrounded by four Dortmunders, rose the highest after a corner and headed to 2-0.
It fit into the picture of a wavering BVB that their own chances were miserably missed. After a cross from Haaland, the weak Meunier missed the goal from a promising position by several meters.
Only after the break did Borussia put up more resistance. But initially the chances of Haaland (50th) and Guerreiro (66th) were missed. The now larger game shares were rewarded a little later. After passing through the substitute Giovanni Reyna, Haaland heaved the ball into the net from around 16 meters. The eleventh goal of the Norwegian in his ninth Champions League game raised new hopes – but only for a short time. Immobile refined his performance with a pass to Akpa-Akpro, which carried out ice cold.
