Munich (dpa) – FC Bayern has to cope with a corona scare before the start of the Champions League. Soccer national player Serge Gnabry misses the Munich team after a positive test at the beginning of the defending champion mission, which begins very worried.
Only 59 days after the magical night with the handle pot, the ghost game champions are overtaken by bitter reality. Gnabry, who was still training with the team on Tuesday, is “fine” according to the club’s donations on Tuesday evening.
The striker will be absent on Wednesday (9 p.m. / Sky). It is to be hoped that no other stars will be infected before the clash against Atlético Madrid. Further tests on matchday should provide information. Only the players who tested negative are allowed into the arena.
Gnabry’s positive test not only underlines how difficult the task will be for “Campeões de Lisboa” this season. Rather, it documents how challenging the season will be for the premier class participants this year. Coach Hansi Flick, who is aiming for “the optimum” this season too, has to adjust his desired line-up for the first game. Only after tests by the team on Wednesday morning and the customer about the results does the 55-year-old know who he can really plan for the game – and whether the game can take place at all.
Hours before the positive test result from the firmly scheduled Gnabry, Flick had emphasized that the players remained healthy as the most important factor. For Gnabry, returning Douglas Costa would probably be in the starting line-up.
Positive corona tests within the team do not necessarily lead to game cancellations. If there are at least 13 players available, the game must be played on the scheduled date. But if the quarantine were ordered by the authorities for the entire team, that would no longer be possible.
The anticipation for the Champions League start was of course gone with the news of the positive test. He knew “that it can go relatively quickly”, Flick had recently speculated. He certainly hadn’t suspected that it could go so quickly. The Munich team is missing a second wing star in addition to the injured newcomer Leroy Sané against the strong defensive Spaniards.
Unlike other Bundesliga and second division clubs as well as a number of top teams in Europe – such as Juventus Turin with multiple world footballer Cristiano Ronaldo – the Bayern professionals have so far been spared infections with Sars-CoV-2. Gnabry’s attacking colleague Kingsley Coman had to go into domestic isolation in mid-September because he had contact with a person infected with the coronavirus.
In addition to worrying about the game, captain Manuel Neuer & Co. also have to worry about the health of their teammates. Most recently, their national team colleague Ilkay Gündogan had warned of the disease. “We have difficult times, all clubs in the world have to deal with them correctly,” said Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.
The 17th start win in a row has become a minor matter for the Munich team, at least on the evening before the game. Opponent Madrid also had positive cases with their B team. The A-Team, which posted numerous pictures with mouth and nose protection from the journey, was therefore not affected.
The insatiable ensemble after the triple and two Supercup trophies wants to achieve in an extremely grueling season in Europe’s elite league what only the “royal” of Real Madrid have achieved in this competition in over a quarter of a century – and under particularly challenging circumstances: Title defense. “The Champions League is always something special. We are ready,” said Robert Lewandowski before a group stage, which, given six group matches in eight weeks, has the character of speed dating.
The Gnabry test made it clear how quickly the meetings can burst. Whether the indispensable teammate Joshua Kimmich is missing alongside him depends on the time of the birth of his second child.
Eight points and 8: 1 goals after four match days is the result of the new team of Messi friend Suárez, who came from FC Barcelona and went down with Barcelona 2: 8 two months ago. At that time, strict hygiene rules were already in force, the importance of which was now made particularly clear to everyone. And everyone should be even more worried if there are further away trips in the group stage with RB Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow as opponents.
