After a corona break: Europa League final in Cologne

Nyon (dpa) – The outstanding games of the Champions League and Europa League will take place centrally in August as a knockout tournament in one country from the quarterfinals.

The winner of the premier class will be chosen in Lisbon, for the Europa League Germany with Cologne as the final venue, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen and Duisburg as the host. It is the first time in five years that a European Cup final is taking place in Germany. This was decided by the Executive Committee of the European Football Union UEFA for the European Cup competitions, which were interrupted due to the coronavirus crisis.

The final of the Champions League rises in Lisbon on August 23, the quarter-finals begin on August 12. There is only one duel at a time and not the first and second leg as usual. The original host Istanbul is now allowed to host the final in 2021, making Munich with the Allianz Arena no longer the venue for the final in 2022, but for 2023.

UEFA does not want to decide until next month whether the knockout tournaments in the Champions League and Europa League will take place without spectators. If he had to answer this question today, he would say that there will be no fans in the stadiums, said UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin after a meeting of the Executive Committee. “But things are changing quickly. A month ago, I couldn’t even answer whether we were playing.” The situation should be assessed in early July to mid-July, said the Slovenian.

The first European Cup final in Germany since the 2015 Champions League final in Berlin is scheduled for August 21 at the RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne. The Europa League tournament in North Rhine-Westphalia starts on August 10th.

The remaining games of the round of 16 in both competitions are to be played in the first week of August. Whether in Portugal and Germany or at the originally planned locations, “decisions will be made in the coming weeks”, said UEFA competition director Giorgio Marchetti. It is currently unclear whether FC Bayern Munich will be playing their second leg against Chelsea at home or already in Portugal after winning 3-0 in the first leg. RB Leipzig is already in the quarter-finals.

In the Europa League, Eintracht Frankfurt have to catch up after defeating FC Basel 3-0 and VfL Wolfsburg after defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-2. Bayer Leverkusen won the first knockout round at Glasgow Rangers 3-1.

When the Champions League and Europa League are continued in August, the clubs may not employ new players in the summer. This was decided by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting in Nyon. Specifically, this means that, for example, FC Bayern Munich may not use goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, who is committed by FC Schalke 04, in the knockout round of the premier class.

Leroy Sané would also not be eligible to play in the Champions League for Munich in the event of a transfer from Manchester City, but would certainly be for the Citizens. If he should move from RB Leipzig to Chelsea, Timo Werner should not be involved in the blues in the pending second round final against Bayern.

However, the clubs may add three players to their list of 25 players that they had to report to at the beginning of the year before the knockout phase began. However, these professionals must have been active for the club in the 2019/20 season.

The season in the Champions League ends with a final tournament in Portugal, with the final on August 23 in Lisbon. The decision in the Europa League is made with knockout duels in Gelsenkirchen, Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Cologne, where the final will take place on August 21.

The Champions League for women will be played in tournament form in Spain. From the quarter-finals, the knockout mode will be played in Bilbao and San Sebastian. The quarter-finals are scheduled for August 21 and 22, and the semi-finals for August 24 and 25. The final will kick off on August 30th at 8:00 p.m. in San Sebastian. The order of the games will be drawn on July 26th in Nyon.

The old and new German champions VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern Munich are still in the race. Wolfsburg play in the quarter-finals against Glasgow City, Bayern have to do with defending champion Olympique Lyon. If they progressed, VfL would face the winner of the match Atletico Madrid against FC Barcelona, the Munich women would face the winner of the duel between Arsenal and Paris St. Germain.

At the same time, the UEFA executive announced the final venues for the next few years: the Champions League winners for women will be determined in Gothenburg in 2021, in Turin in 2022 and in Eindhoven in 2023.
