But not before the US election? Positive corona test delays Richter proceedings for Amy Coney Barrett

7:37 p.m.: A positive coronavirus test with a senator could delay the filling of the vacancy at the US Supreme Court. Republican Mike Lee, who is a member of the Senate Legal Committee, announced his infection on Friday. Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer immediately called on the panel to suspend the process of appointing candidate Amy Coney Barrett until the extent of the corona spread among Senators becomes clear.

The conservative lawyer Barrett is President Donald Trump’s candidate to succeed the recently deceased liberal justice icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Supreme Court justices are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The Democrats criticize Trump and the Republican majority in the Senate rushing ahead with the process shortly before the presidential election. They warn that Barrett is likely to vote to end President Barack Obama’s health care reform. With Barrett, the Conservatives would have a majority of six of the nine seats in the Supreme Court, which repeatedly sets the strategic course for US society.
